QotD: First Job

What was your very first job?

My first paying job was a Summer Job right after 5th Grade doing Outdoor Manual Labor along with two of my school buddies for the Trailer Park where we were living at. We worked about 6 to 8hrs a day ( I don't remember the hours) Monday through Friday and made $5 an hour. We worked along side the actual Maintenance Crew of the park helping out with yard work, trash detail, and pool cleaning among other things. I lasted about a month before I was fired by the Park Manager. I may be Mexican, but I'm not built for outdoor manual labor. A week later, my buddies were fired as well.

Berney Park S.C. – Metro Soccer Tournament

So the big Metro Soccer Tournament took place this past weekend, with the qualifier games taking place on Saturday an the Championship Rounds on Sunday. Myself and the rest of Berny Park S.C. was looking forward to a long and competitive day of Soccer. Our first game started at 9am vs the Rowlett Raiders. For this game I would start at Left-Mid Fielder. Within the first two minutes we scored a Goal. Another few minutes later as I attempted to chase the opponent with the ball, I made a cut to go to the right using my left leg. As I planted my left foot, heard a "pop" and felt my calf muscle contract. Initially there was no pain so I tried to run. After several attempts, I couldn't so I had to "kneel down" so the Ref could stop the play on the field so I could make an exit.

I limped off the field pretty sure I had just pulled my Calf Muscle and didn't fully understand the severity of this injury as I have never really been injured like this before, and I honestly thought I could just walk it off and play again in the next half or be ready by the start of the next game. But after I had described what had happened to my teammates on the sidelines, they told I wouldn't be doing much of anything for a few weeks at the minimum. And they were right, after about 5 minutes of playing time, I was done for the day with only a slide block and a bone head miss on a play for the ball as my only two highlights. I iced up my left calf muscle and watched the rest of the game from the sidelines. We went on to win that game 1-0. The next two games vs. Delilah FC and vs.TN Dallas I could only look on as Berny Park S.C. lost both of those games. 2-0 vs Delilah and, well I stopped keeping score vs. TN Dallas because it got so bad. Needless to say we didn't qualify to play on Sunday.

Two days later I continue walking with a limp. There is no sever pain or discoloration, only discomfort if I try to stretch out and walk correctly with my left leg. Thank goodness I sit in a chair for a living. I am going to cancel my participation in the Summer Soccer League as it's only a few weeks away. I don't want to risk re-injuring my leg and possibly make it worse and be on one leg for the entire summer.  And I'm skipping the gym for the next few days. If it doesn't get worse, I will attempt to continue my exercising by altering my workouts so there is no strain on my legs.

Some might tell me to really take it easy for the next few weeks, and maybe I should. I could always spend more time playing games. I just got "Punch Out" for the Will and I am addicted to it like I was back in the 80's. Or I can pick up the pencil/photoshop and get creative over the summer. That would be really fun for me.

Could Owning Comics/Manga Be A Crime?

I had not heard of this story until today and I found it a bit unsettling as I have a collection of Comics and Manga in my possession.

CBLDF Disappointed By Guilty Plea in Handley Manga Case

http://www.cbldf.org/pr/archives/000390.shtml

According to a press release issued by the Department of Justice, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has learned that Christopher Handley, the Iowa manga collector, has pleaded guilty "to possessing obscene visual representations of the sexual abuse of children and mailing obscene material." CBLDF had served as a special consultant to Mr. Handley's defense. The government's press release states, "Handley faces a maximum of 15 years in prison, a maximum fine of $250,000, and a three-year term of supervised release." Additionally, he forfeits all property seized in his prosecution.

The CBLDF became special consultant to Mr. Handley's defense team last October. In this limited role, the Fund facilitated access to First Amendment experts; recommended expert witnesses on manga; and funded expert research pursuant to an eventual jury trial. The CBLDF spent $2,400 on that research, and had allocated up to $15,000 for expert witness expenses.

"Naturally, we are very disappointed by this result, but understand that in a criminal case, every defendant must make the decision that they believe serves their best interest," CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein said. "Because the set of facts specific to this case were so unique, we hope that its importance as precedent will be minimal. However, we must also continue to be prepared for the possibility that other cases could arise in the future as a result."

Brownstein adds, "Mr. Handley now faces the loss of his freedom and his property, all for owning a handful of comic books. It's chilling. The Fund remains unwavering in our commitment to be prepared to manage future threats of this nature wherever they arise. This is the unfortunate conclusion of Mr. Handley's case, but it is not the end of this sort of prosecution. For that reason, the Fund stands steadfast in our commitment to defending the First Amendment rights of the comics art form."

Neil Gaiman On The ‘Obscenity’ Of Manga Collector Christopher Handley’s Trial

Look through your comic book collection. Do you have Alan Moore’s “Lost Girls”? Any of S. Clay Wilson’s Underground Comix? Even Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman” series? If the prosecution of manga collector Christopher Handley sticks, all of that and more could be considered obscene, Gaiman told MTV.

“I wrote a story about a serial killer who kidnaps and rapes children, and then murders them,” Gaiman said, referring to a storyline in “The Doll’s House.” “We did that as a comic, not for the purposes of titillation or anything like that, but if you bought that comic, you could be arrested for it? That’s just deeply wrong. Nobody was hurt. The only thing that was hurt were ideas.”

Gaiman’s currently supporting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund’s fight to defend Handley, who was arrested in Iowa for possession of obscene material based on his private collection, which included lolicon and yaoi manga. Lolicon focuses on the Lolita complex, where yaoi features male homosexual romance for a primarily female audience.

“They found his manga, and found some objectionable panels,” Gaiman said. “He’s been arrested for having some drawings of rude things in manga. I’m sorry, but if you went through my comic collection, you could arrest me if you’re going to start doing that. It’s just wrong.”

“There is explicit sex in yaoi comics,” Handley’s lawyer Eric Chase told MTV. “And the men are drawn in a very androgynous style, which has the effect of making them look really young. There’s a real taboo in Japan about showing pubic hair, so they’re all drawn without it, which also makes them look young. So what concerned the authorities were the depictions of children in explicit sexual situations that they believed to be obscene. But there are no actual children. It was all very crude images from a comic book.”

“Do you remember there was a law passed prohibiting making things that simulated child pornography, even if the things actually weren’t?” Gaiman asked, referring to part of the PROTECT Act (18 U.S.C. Section 1466A). (As in situations where an of-age female is in a pornographic situation, but “where she’s being presented as if she were 13.”) “They said, ‘For heaven’s sake, we’re not talking about art. We’re only talking about stuff where you’re leading people to believe they’re looking at real child porn,’” said Gaiman.

Still, despite the argument that there was no actual children portrayed in the manga, Handley faces felony obsenity charges, including the receipt and possession of obscene visual representations of the sexual abuse of children. The case is going to trial on December 2. The jury will determine whether the manga is obscene or if it has artistic value. If found guilty of the charges against him, Handley faces a five-year mandatory minimum sentence.

“He’d be punished as if it were actual child porn,” his lawyer said. “And he did not look at child pornography.”

Gaiman’s been making appearances and giving the OK to Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab to make perfumes of his books to benefit the CBLDF to help them raise funds for Handley’s defense, as they did for comic book store owner Gordon Lee.

“They’ve made in excess of $38,000 for the fund, which is pretty wonderful,” Gaiman said, “and it’s real money that gets used for legal cases.”

Neil Gaiman: Why Defend Freedom of Icky Speech?

http://www.cbldf.org/articles/archives/000378.shtml

"The CBLDF will defend your First Amendment right as an adult to make lines on paper, to draw, to write, to sell, to publish, and now, to own comics. And that's what makes the kind of work you don't like, or don't read, or work that you do not feel has artistic worth or redeeming features worth defending. It's because the same laws cover the stuff you like and the stuff you find icky, wherever your icky line happens to be: the law is a big blunt instrument that makes no fine distinctions, and because you only realize how wonderful absolute freedom of speech is the day you lose it."

QotD: Happy Memorial Day

How are you spending Memorial Day?

I came to work today because I forgot I had the day off. Which is fine by my as I'll only be here for a few hours and this will give me some time work on some images and stay ahead for the week. After this I'll try to catch an afternoon showing of "Terminator Salvation" and then spend the rest of the day off of my feet by playing "Punch Out" for the Wii.

QotD: One Hour to Live.

One hour to live. What do you do?
Submitted by Jeff Zie.

Vehicular Mayhem. Which most may find Ironic for two reasons. 1st being because of my last blog entry. And the second would be that I consider myself a rather boring person. I'm sure my friends/family would be shocked to learn that this is what I would do with my final hour on earth. Regardless, If I'm gonna go out, then I might as well go all out. So, after being inside some random woman for a whole 2 minutes, I'll jack the fastest car I can find and give the police or whomever challenges me on a chase for the ages. And then – BOOM!!! I'll show them all how to live!

PLAY LOUD

QotD: Licensed to Drive

Should we just be handing over the car keys when kids turn 16? Why or why not?

Sponsored by Allstate. Learn more at allstate.com/STANDUP.

I'm pretty sure I have made my feelings quite clear on this matter as I have ranted about it several times on this blog. If you must insist on having young inexperienced drivers on the roads, then maybe they should be restricted to driving Smart Cars or some other type of compact cars.
