QotD: My Own Personal Spit-Take

What did you drink that made you do your last famous Hollywood "spit-take"?
Submitted by LittleGreenBook

This tale happened a few years back when I was hanging out at my friends apartment playing video games and such. His apartment isn't the most tidy in the world so needless to say there is crap all over the place, including all of the Coke cans we had been drinking throughout the day. Add to the mix that my friends brother smokes and he has the habit of using bottles or cans for an ash tray.

Well like a dummy I wasn't paying attention to which can I picked up to take a sip of my cola and this time I would choose the wrong can. I took a swig and I swallowed a mouth full of old soda filled with cigarette ash. Now it takes a full second (which seems like forever) to realize this disgusting brew that is in my is not my cola before I spit most of it out, I'm pretty sure I swallowed a bit. And yes, I did get called a dumb ass and laughed at, and I supposed I deserved it. Of course you would figure I that I had learned from that god awful experience, but the fact is that has happened to me at least twice.

Vox Hunt: No Vocals Allowed

Audio:  Share a great instrumental song or album.

This is such an beautiful song. If I could learn to play just one song on the piano, it would be "Sonata No. 14". Enjoy.

Piano Sonata No 14, Moonlight

BMX

Me and my buddy had some time to kill before we saw Grindhouse last night, so we ended up hanging out at the Woodward Skate Park that is right across the movie theater. While we were there a BMX competition (Playstation AM Jam) was going on, so I went to my car and grabbed my camera and took some video. You gotta see the Backflip clip. Yes, he was o.k.

Grindhouse – Movie Review

Recommended

Fun! That is all I really need to say to describe the experience of seeing Grindhouse. A film that definitely must be seen in a theater with a large crowd. This was the first time in a long time that the crowd I was with was hollering and cheering at the screen throughout the entire movie, and this one is over 3hrs. long. For those not in the know, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino made Grindhouse as an homage to the exploitation films they grew up watching. And they succeeded in replicating the style of those films in every detail. They even included "missing reel" segments, one in each film and both of them getting (and deserving) the loudest boos of the film.

In a nutshell the movie starts with the faux trailer Machete. Then starts Rodriguez's  zombie flick Planet Terror. This film has quite possibly the best opening to a movie ever (Rose Mcgowen displaying her assets to the Planet Terror theme). The plot of the film is about a toxic gas that has been released in a small Texas town and it slowly turns the locals into mutated, puss filled zombies. This one feels like it came right out of the 70's, complete with a Carpenter-esque score and over the top gore. So over the top in fact that it almost becomes a comedy. I saw no attempt to make  any part of this film scary at all.

There is no official intermission between the two movies. Instead  there are 3 more phony trailers, so if you gotta take care of business, I suggest you do it then. If you do need a break, all you will miss is Werewolf Women of the S.S., Don't, and Thanksgiving. Of the four fake trailers, I thought Thanksgiving was the best because it was so freaking ridiculous.

The second feature is Tarantino's Death Proof and is about a psychopath named Stuntman Mike stalking and killing young girls with his car. And I call Stuntman Mike crazy not because he likes to kill young girls (honestly who doesn't), but that he has no problem ruining badass cars in order to do it. I have a feeling gearheads will love and hate this film at the same time. And this movie delivers on the promise of a great car chase scene, which is the last act of the film. Overall I enjoyed both films, but I liked Planet Terror a bit more and I think most people will too because of the slow pace of (not that it is a bad thing) Death Proof.

Needless to say, if violence, gore, drugs, and nudity isn't your cup of tea, then stay far away from this film. On the other hand, If you do enjoy seeing all of those things in excess, then run to your local theaters and see Grindhouse.

Is This the End of DRM?

Finally, a record label is thinking forward. EMI is going to offer DRM free music through iTunes at a price of $1.29. You will still have the option to pay $0.99 for the low quality tracks with DRM still applied. Complete albums from EMI artists purchased on the iTunes Store will automatically be sold at the higher sound quality and DRM-free, with no change in the price. And for those who have already purchased standard DRM tracks or albums, you can upgrade to the DRM free music for $0.30 per track. Hopefully this little experiment will work and the other record labels will take notice.

From EMI's Website:

"London, 2 April 2007 — EMI Music today announced that it is launching new premium downloads for retail on a global basis, making all of its digital repertoire available at a much higher sound quality than existing downloads and free of digital rights management (DRM) restrictions.

The new higher quality DRM-free music will complement EMI's existing range of standard DRM-protected downloads already available. From today, EMI's retailers will be offered downloads of tracks and albums in the DRM-free audio format of their choice in a variety of bit rates up to CD quality. EMI is releasing the premium downloads in response to consumer demand for high fidelity digital music for use on home music systems, mobile phones and digital music players. EMI's new DRM-free products will enable full interoperability of digital music across all devices and platforms.

Eric Nicoli, CEO of EMI Group, said, "Our goal is to give consumers the best possible digital music experience. By providing DRM-free downloads, we aim to address the lack of interoperability which is frustrating for many music fans. We believe that offering consumers the opportunity to buy higher quality tracks and listen to them on the device or platform of their choice will boost sales of digital music.

"Apple have been a true pioneer in digital music, and we are delighted that they share our vision of an interoperable market that provides consumers with greater choice, quality, convenience and value for money."

"Selling digital music DRM-free is the right step forward for the music industry," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "EMI has been a great partner for iTunes and is once again leading the industry as the first major music company to offer its entire digital catalogue DRM-free."

Apple's iTunes Store (www.itunes.com) is the first online music store to receive EMI's new premium downloads. Apple has announced that iTunes will make individual AAC format tracks available from EMI artists at twice the sound quality of existing downloads, with their DRM removed, at a price of $1.29/€1.29/£0.99. iTunes will continue to offer consumers the ability to pay $0.99/€0.99/£0.79 for standard sound quality tracks with DRM still applied.  Complete albums from EMI Music artists purchased on the iTunes Store will automatically be sold at the higher sound quality and DRM-free, with no change in the price. Consumers who have already purchased standard tracks or albums with DRM will be able to upgrade their digital music for $0.30/€0.30/£0.20 per track.  All EMI music videos will also be available on the iTunes Store DRM-free with no change in price.

EMI is introducing a new wholesale price for premium single track downloads, while maintaining the existing wholesale price for complete albums. EMI expects that consumers will be able to purchase higher quality DRM-free downloads from a variety of digital music stores within the coming weeks, with each retailer choosing whether to sell downloads in AAC, WMA, MP3 or other unprotected formats of their choice. Music fans will be able to purchase higher quality DRM-free digital music for personal use, and listen to it on a wide range of digital music players and music-enabled phones.

EMI's move follows a series of experiments it conducted recently. Norah Jones's "Thinking About You", Relient K's "Must've Done Something Right", and Lily Allen's "Littlest Things" were all made available for sale in the MP3 format in trials held at the end of last year.

EMI Music will continue to employ DRM as appropriate to enable innovative digital models such as subscription services (where users pay a monthly fee for unlimited access to music), super-distribution (allowing fans to share music with their friends) and time-limited downloads (such as those offered by ad-supported services).

Nicoli added: "Protecting the intellectual property of EMI and our artists is as important as ever, and we will continue to work to fight piracy in all its forms and to educate consumers. We believe that fans will be excited by the flexibility that DRM-free formats provide, and will see this as an incentive to purchase more of our artists' music."

QotD: Fooled

What's the best April Fool's Day prank you've pulled off or been fooled by?

The picture speaks for itself.

If the prank doesn't have "explosive" results, then why bother. Thank god for "April Fools Day", the one day that every prank is nice and legal.
