The Violation of Black Sunshine
After the screening of "Breach" Thursday night, I headed back to my buddies apartment to hang out for a bit before I headed home myself. Now I park right around the corner from his apartment so I don't take anyones parking space who lives their and I'm usually not to happy about it especially if I stay for several hours because it's not quite the "most secure" neighborhood in the area. Well I ended up staying there for about 2 hours that night cause I stayed to watch the movie "Silent Hill" (it was better than I thought it would be).
So the movie ends, I say my farewell and I make my way towards my car. At first glance I noticed it's still there and all is well, but as I got closer and closer it began to look a bit odd. As I got right up to the car, I suddenly realized it that in fact it wasn't my car at all. I thought to myself, "Silly Me, I must have parked a few spaces down". So I wondered back and forth the lot a few times and I still did not see my car. It was gone.
Now this is where you'd think that I should have blown up, yelled out loud, gotten angry, or had a panic attack. Instead I was surprisingly calm, you could say that I was in a Zen like state. So I got back to my friends apartment and tell him very calmly "My car is gone". "No it's not" was his reply as he was sure I was just joking with him, cause I said it with such a straight face. So I need to make some calls when I realize I don't have my phone. Fuck, I must have left it in the car. So I go back outside with my friend and his phone to reconfirm that in fact my car is gone. Now right before I call the pigs, I look around the car that is now parked in the spot where mine was and I realized that there is no broken glass around. That's when look up the the wall of the apartment complex and pay attention to the "Resident Only Parking: All other vehicles will be towed at the owners expense". That sign that I have ignored for the past 10 years.
I call the phone number on the bottom of the sign and sure enough, they took my car. The reason, it didn't have a residential sticker on it and I was parked in a "residential zone". Apparently the apartment complex has issued parking stickers for their residents. My friend doesn't have a car, so I doubt he knew or cared about this or even remembered if they handed out a memo about this to the residents. And the visitors parking is on the other side of the complex, and If I'm going to park there I might as well leave my windows down and the keys in the ignition with a big sign that says "Take Me".
After I get off the phone with the towing company, it's well past Midnight and no one is going to come and get me to take me to pick up my car, so I ended up spending the night of on the floor of my friends apartment, which even the bravest man would have trouble doing, his place isn't the most tidy of apartments and I'll just leave it at that. And to no surprise I didn't really get much sleep that night.
The next morning (Friday) my stepfather comes and picks me up, First he take me to the bank cause I'm gonna need a lot of cash. Then we head towards the impound lot. It ends up my car was taken to the Industrial side of Oak Cliff. For those of you who know the area, that's not someplace you would like to visit. I swear that impound lot was like going to a prison. That place had barbed wire fences, a big ass dog, and plenty of shady characters about. I had to get "proof of ownership" and that was in my car, so they had someone escort me to my car. As I was walking around the yard all I could think about was how my car could ever end up in a place like this. And then at the end of the yard, I saw it, like a jewel standing out among the rest of the junk piles they have impounded, my "Black Sunshine". I inspected my vehicle to make sure they didn't do any damage but to be honest, my car has so many little nicks and dents, If there was any damage I couldn't tell.
In the end I would have to pay $159.65 to get my car back. Personally I felt like it was some sort of legal rape, I got screwed in the ass and all I could do was sit back and take it. That's life I guess and I'm sure it could have been a whole lot worse.
