The Violation of Black Sunshine

After the screening of "Breach" Thursday night, I headed back to my buddies apartment to hang out for a bit before I headed home myself. Now I park right around the corner from his apartment so I don't take anyones parking space who lives their and I'm usually not to happy about it especially if I stay for several hours because it's not quite the "most secure" neighborhood in the area. Well I ended up staying there for about 2 hours that night cause I stayed to watch the movie "Silent Hill" (it was better than I thought it would be).

So the movie ends, I say my farewell and I make my way towards my car. At first glance I noticed it's still there and all is well, but as I got closer and closer it began to look a bit odd. As I got right up to the car, I suddenly realized it  that in fact it wasn't my car at all. I thought to myself, "Silly Me, I must have parked a few spaces down". So I wondered back and forth the lot a few times and I still did not see my car. It was gone.

Now this is where you'd think that I should have blown up, yelled out loud, gotten angry, or had a panic attack. Instead I was surprisingly calm, you could say that I was in a Zen like state. So I got back to my friends apartment and tell him very calmly "My car is gone". "No it's not" was his reply as he was sure I was just joking with him, cause I said it with such a straight face. So I need to make some calls when I realize I don't have my phone. Fuck, I must have left it in the car. So I go back outside with my friend and his phone to reconfirm that in fact my car is gone. Now right before I call the pigs, I look around the car that is now parked in the spot where mine was and I realized that there is no broken glass around. That's when look up the the wall of the apartment complex and pay attention to the "Resident Only Parking: All other vehicles will be towed at the owners expense". That sign that I have ignored for the past 10 years.

I call the phone number on the bottom of the sign and sure enough, they took my car. The reason, it didn't have a residential sticker on it and I was parked in a "residential zone". Apparently the apartment complex has issued parking stickers for their residents. My friend doesn't have a car, so I doubt he knew or cared about this or even remembered if they handed out a memo about this to the residents. And the visitors parking is on the other side of the complex, and If I'm going to park there I might as well leave my windows down and the keys in the ignition with a big sign that says "Take Me".

After I get off the phone with the towing company, it's well past Midnight and no one is going to come and get me to take me to pick up my car, so I ended up spending the night of on the floor of my friends apartment, which even the bravest man would have trouble doing, his place isn't the most tidy of apartments and I'll just leave it at that. And to no surprise I didn't really get much sleep that night.

The next morning (Friday) my stepfather comes and picks me up, First he take me to the bank cause I'm gonna need a lot of cash. Then we head towards the impound lot. It ends up my car was taken to the Industrial side of Oak Cliff. For those of you who know the area, that's not someplace you would like to visit. I swear that impound lot was like going to a prison. That place had barbed wire fences, a big ass dog, and plenty of shady characters about. I had to get "proof of ownership" and that was in my car, so they had someone escort me to my car. As I was walking around the yard all I could think about was how my car could ever end up in a place like this. And then at the end of the yard, I saw it, like a jewel standing out among the rest of the junk piles they have impounded, my "Black Sunshine". I inspected my vehicle to make sure they didn't do any damage but to be honest, my car has so many little nicks and dents, If there was any damage I couldn't tell.

In the end I would have to pay $159.65 to get my car back. Personally I felt like it was some sort of legal rape, I got screwed in the ass and all I could do was sit back and take it. That's life I guess and I'm sure it could have been a whole lot worse.

Breach – Movie Review

I'll get straight to the point, wait to see this movie when it plays on T.V.

I'm not going to call this a "bad" movie, more like a made for T.V. movie that made its way to the big screen. The plot takes place in the final year of the U.S. governments effort to bring down Robert Hanssen (Chris Cooper), a spy who betrayed the United States for over 20 years. Now because the story is told straight forward and we know  that he is the traitor and was caught from the beginning of the movie, this film has little to no tension or no real surprises to offer.

On the positive side, the movie has pretty good acting performances from the entire cast which is a good thing because there are no action scenes, this is a straight character driven film. That being said, I'd still say that it's not enough reason to see this movie in the theaters.

Thats about it.

Hellboy:Sword of Storms – DVD Review

The Movie: The story begins with Hellboy (Ron Pearlman), Liz (Selma Blair), &  Abe (Doug Jones) just returning from a case in the jungles of South America when the BPRD send Hellboy with Agent Kate Corrigan (Peri Gilpin) to investigate the disappearance of a Japanese Professor, who has become possessed by the two demons of Thunder and Lightning. When Hellboy arrives on the scene in Japan, he picks up the cursed "Sword of Storms" and is sucked into an alternate reality where Japanese Myths and Folklore come to life. While Hellboy is making his way through the land confronting all sorts bizarre creatures in order to find his way home, Liz and Abe battle a creature in the middle of the Pacific Ocean & Agents Kate and Russell continue to try and locate the missing Professor.

The Look & Sound:
"Sword of Storms" is presented in at a 1.78:1 aspect ratio and has a great anamorphic transfer. The quality of the animation is pretty good, it's right on par with other top notch Anime flicks. The movie has three sound options, a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix in English and 2.0 versions in English and in Spanish. There is also an audio commentary with creator Mike Mignola, & Directors Tad Stones and Phil Weinstein.

The Extras: This DVD has plenty of extras, starting with the "Follow the Fox" option.  A fox will appear on screen and when selected will take you to a series of short behind the scenes cilps: "Origins": The Myths that inspired the Movie, "A View from the Top": How the Hellboy short story "Heads" was adapted into the film, "Tale Spin": A breakdown of the "Spider Lady" sequence, "Prop Prefecture": The design of the props, & "Samurai Songs": Meet Christopher Drake, who alone composed and played the entire score on his Keyboard synthesizer. These documentaries are also available to watch standalone from the film in the special features section, most of which are in the "Hellboy Goes East" section. The other featurettes included are: "To Hell and Back": A conversation with Mike Mignola on the creation and history of Hellboy, "A New Breed": A look at the new design concepts of Hellboy Animated, "Conquering Hellboy": Behind the scenes with the voice cast, & "Keepers of Hellboy": The 2006 "Comic Con" Panel for "Sword of Storms". There are a handful of trailers, most notably "Blood & Iron" (the next Hellboy animated feature). And lastly, the DVD comes packed with a mini Hellboy Animated comic Book "Phantom Limbs".

My Take: This DVD shines on all counts, it's a good movie, has very nice animation, and is packed with plenty of extras. Fans of Animation & Sci-Fi should give this movie a look with a Rental and Hellboy fans should definitely Buy this DVD.

I'll end with the trailer for the next Hellboy Animated Feature: "Blood & Iron" due out in May.

My Super Hero Lover Is…

My Super Hero Lover is Aurora.

Who?

Now I consider myself a bit of a comic book geek, but I can't say that have I ever heard of her, but I can't complain because she would definitely be my type. If she was real that is.

QotD: Repeat After Me…

How have people mispronounced your name?  How is it supposed to sound?
Submitted by Lorie.

Yes, my first name is mispronounced all the damn time, but after all the years of the incorrect pronunciations of my name I can't say that it really bothers me anymore.
Most people pronounce my name PAYdro when it is supposed to be pronounced PEDro. So far over the years only Mexicans and those fluent in espanol seem to say my name correct.

Vox Hunt: It’s Like This…

Audio: Share a song that reminds you of a current or past relationship.

Down in a Hole
Alice In Chains

As far as a current relationship, this isn't one so I can't offer a comment. Now past relationships, I've had plenty of them. The last one you can say didn't end so well and just by looking at the song title (or album title) I picked, you can tell where it left me.
Now I'm not going to bore you with a tale of sadness & woe, I'll just let the song speak for itself. Besides, I'm sure you've all been there before and I've long since gotten over it.

The Illusionist – DVD Review

The Plot: Based on the short story by Steven Millhauser, "The Illusionist" takes place in the early 1900’s of , where Eisenheim the Illusionist (Edward Norton) finds his childhood love Sophie (Jessica Biel) after 15 years of separation. When he discovers that she is unwillingly engaged to the cruel Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell), Eisenheim sets in motion a complex plan using his “Mystical Powers” to free Sophie and bring down the Prince. It is up to Chief Inspector Uhl (Paul Giamatti) to uncover the truth behind Eisenheim’s plot, was any of it real or all an illusion?

The Look & Sound: “The Illusionist” is presented with a 1.78:1 anamorphic wide-screen transfer (never waste your time with the full frame versions of the films). The picture is nice & crisp and has a rich color pallet, I would love to see a HD version of this film. The movie has an English 5.1 Dolby Surround mix which really brings out the movie’s wonderful score. I can’t stress how much I loved Phillip Glass's score of this film. There are also optional English or Spanish subtitles.

The Extras: Here’s where "The Illusionist" is lacking. There is a “Director’s Commentary” which is really interesting and informative. Also included on the disk are two featurettes, the first of which is a brief “The Making of The Illusionist” which is basically some cast interviews edited with the film’s trailer. The second is “Jessica Beil on The Illusionist” which is the same thing as the “Making Of” with just Jessica’s Comments making it a total waste of time to watch. And finally there are a handful of trailers to round out the lack luster Special Features.

Packaging: Nothing special here, the movie comes in a standard plastic case & the Cover Art is just a mediocre Photoshop job of the three main characters thrown together.

My Take: Overall I really enjoyed “The Illusionist”. The film had a Good Story, Good Acting (especially by Giamatti), and a great Musical Score, however the DVD had next to nothing in bonus material. The Illusionist” is a solid rental, the movie is worth seeing but the DVD is lacking for a purchase.
