Dr Pepper to Make Good on Chinese Democracy Stunt

By Eliot Van Buskirk EmailOctober 23, 2008 | 9:12:32 AMCategories: Bands or Brands?

GunsnrosesSoda manufacturer Dr Pepper promised a free soft drink to everyone in America if Guns N' Roses releases its long-awaited Chinese Democracy album before the end of 2008.

Now that Axl and company have set a release date of November 23, Dr Pepper says it will make good on the offer. Those who want to claim a free soda can go to the Dr. Pepper website on November 23, enter some personal information and get a coupon for one 20-ounce drink that should arrive within the following 4 to 6 weeks. (The offer strangely said no free soda for former GNR members Slash and Buckethead.) The freebies expire in February 2009.

The band didn't know about the promotion until it was announced in March 2008. When he heard about the proposed giveaway, Axl Rose explained: "We are surprised and very happy to have the support of Dr Pepper with our album Chinese Democracy, as for us, this came totally out of the blue. If there is any involvement with this promotion by our record company or others, we are unaware of such at this time. And as some of Buckethead's performances are on our album, I'll share my Dr Pepper with him."

Finally! New Guns N’ Roses album on Nov. 23

News I have been waiting for since the end of my High School days.

NEW YORK – More than a decade after its conception, Guns N’ Roses’ “Chinese Democracy” will finally see the light of day before year’s end, sources close to the situation told Billboard.

The set will be a Best Buy exclusive and will be available Sunday, Nov. 23, rather than the usual Tuesday.

In the run-up to release date, album track “Shackler’s Revenge” will debut in the video game “Rock Band 2,” while a portion of “If the World” is playing over the end credits in the new Leonardo DiCaprio/Russell Crowe film “Body of Lies.”

In addition, GNR’s seminal 1987 full-length debut, “Appetite for Destruction,” will be reissued on vinyl on October 28 via Interscope.

The band’s last new studio albums were the simultaneously released “Use Your Illusion I” and “Use Your Illusion II” in September 1991. A covers set, “The Spaghetti Incident?,” followed in 1993, and featured some of the last GNR recordings from original guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan.

This spring, soft drink manufacturer Dr Pepper offered to send a free can of the beverage to “everyone in America” (excluding ex-GNR members Slash and Buckethead) if “Chinese Democracy” were to arrive anytime during the calendar year 2008. A Dr Pepper spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

Vox Hunt: Don’t Worry Be Happy

Show us something that always makes you laugh.

It's been a few weeks now that I have seen these same four Podcasts of "Book Chat" with Rainn Wilson and I still laugh out loud each time I watch them. In fact I've been laughing here at work so hard that I've gotten asked if I was crying. It might be because I'm such a GN'R/Slash fan that I find these episodes hilarious, especially episode 2. The way Rainn keeps insulting him and Slash just plays the whole thing with a straight face just keeps me in stitches. So here is Episode 2  titled "Guisseppe" for your entertainment. Enjoy!
