!Feliz Cinco de Mayo! – Girl In a Coma

Thank god for the internet! Really! Otherwise I don't think I would ever discover, listen, and buy new music. Case in point – Girl In a Coma. A Trio of Texican ladies, sisters Nina (vocals/guitar) and Phanie Diaz (drums) and Jenn Alva (bass) based out of San Antonio (just a few hours South of here) who play Punk/Rock. Funny thing (for me at least) is that they have been around for several years now, but up until last month, I had never heard of them.

I just happen to be browsing the Amoeba Music Store website checking out their in-store live shows (if your really into Indie music, check out their In-Store Live Show page) when I happen to come across this bands performance page.

I'll admit it, at first I wasn't all that impressed with them. Nina has a rather unique voice and singing style. Half the time I can't understand her words when she sings. But the music was good and catchy, and they do put on a real good live show. So after multiple listens, their music finally grew on me.

But it wasn't until I learned more about them that they really gained my admiration and respect. They are indeed "for real". They are not another LA manufactured band who sing about shallow and material things. They don't put on a fake, and again manufactured persona. They really are who they are and fully embrace their Mexican heritage. But when I found out that they were from Texas, that really sealed the deal for me.

Long story short, I dig 'em. So I ended up buying their CD a few weeks ago. Overall pretty good. I do enjoy it. So what better day than today – Cinco de Mayo – to share a new favorite Mexican American Punk/Rock band.

Listen, Enjoy and Rock On!!

If you live in Texas…

Or anywhere it tends to get hot, you may not want to leave your cans of Soda in the backseat of your car because they might explode on you. Yesterday I found that out the hard way. My normal routine is to bring my drinks to work with me and stick them in the fridge we have here in our office. Well this week I didn't bother bringing my sodas up with me becuase I'm try to cut down on drinking them in favor of Tea. So when I got off work yesterday afternoon and I got to the car, I discovered this mess. 4 cans of Soda exploded and soaked most of the back seat, my gym bag, and the two gym towels I had. One of the cans just imploded a bit and the rest were fine. I'm guessing it was just part of the box was exposed to the hot afternoon sun and that's why they all didn't explode. Fortunately for me, they were cans of Diet Soda, so the mess I can't clean up and left behind won't be all sticky.

You Know Your A Dumb Ass When…

…you see that its raining outside but you forgot that you left your car window down yesterday. Then when you go out, you get to ride in a damp seat for the rest of the day.

Back Home In Texas

After 2 weeks of being in Shreveport, I'm finally back in home in D/FW. But I'm sure there are still some folks out there in the world who are still out of town and miss their home. So I'm dedicating this song for all of my fellow Texicans who are still far and away. Texas Song by Ms. Sandy Cheeks, the little squirrel who lives under the sea.

Kittie – Live @ Fat Daddys in Lewisville Texas

So here are the pictures and videos from the Kittie show I went to last Saturday. This is now the fourth time I have been to their show and the second time I have seen them this year. Their recent stop to the D/FW area brought them to Lewisville, TX. The venue they played: Fat Daddy's.

Now, I never like to post negative things about people or places, but that place was a dump. The stage looked like it was going to fall apart any second. And because it was so hot in there and everyone was crowded right on one another that by the time Kittie hit the stage, it smelled like warm piss. As much as I would love to see them play a bigger and better venue, that is the sacrifice that I'd gladly make to get up close to the band while they play.

As for the show itself,  Walls of Jericho kicked the hell out of me, Candace is such a little ball of energy.  And true to form, Kittie rocked the house and laid waste to Lewisville. But unlike last time I didn't get to be a groupie and say hi to the band (I don't think I will ever beat you Ina). As for the other bands, they were ok at best. One of them really sucked.

The lesson I learned from the last show I went to is that this time I saved all my memory for Kittie and not waste it on the other bands, but I did make sure to get one of Candace (Walls of Jericho) and myself after the show as I didn't get one of her the last time she was in town. This time I did get a lot more shots of the girls, but a lot of them came out blurry because I still have not read the manual to my camera on how to take "Action Shots".

And finally a few videos from the show. Again you'll have to excuse the suck ass sound quality (anyone out there know how to fix/enhance sound contact me) and shaky camera work, after all it's hard to rock out and hold a camera at the same time.

Dr. Pepper, Texas

Since we had to go and drive to get my stepbrother from Abilene, my mother

wanted to make a side trip to Dublin, TX just to pick up a whole lot of Dublin Dr. Pepper just for my brother because he's a Dr. Pepper nut and its' (supposedly) cheaper to buy there. I'll admit, I'm not the biggest Dr. Pepper fan, but even I think the original formula ( made with Imperial Pure Cane Sugar) tastes better than the current one (made with artificial sweeteners), so I can see why she does this all the time for him (She has yet to get me chocolate from Hershey, PA).

Since it was my first visit down there, we stopped by the Dr. Pepper Bottling Factory/Museum. If you happen to be a big fan of this drink, this place is your shrine. They had all kinds of unique things there like Dr. Pepper Beef Jerky. We took the tour, saw the factory and the historical memorabilia, and even got a free Dr. Pepper. After that we just went looking around the quaint little town before heading out. Needless to say I took a bunch of pictures of that day but I just put a few of them in this post. If you care to see the rest of the photographs, you can do so by clicking here.

If Rocky can do it, so can I.

This sun has been hiding from me. For the past few days in North Texas its been cold, raining, and dark.

I couldn't be more happier.

For whatever reason, maybe it's encoded somewhere in my DNA, or cause it's a change of pace from the normal Hot Weather and Bright Sun of Texas. Who knows and who really cares, but I feel a lot more upbeat when it's nice and gloomy. I will continue to welcome the cold weather for as long as it wants to stay.

However, I can't say that it has been all smooth sailing for me. As I leave the gym and walk outside straight into the cold is really the only time when I feel a bit uncomfortable. Now that I think about it, maybe its not such a good idea to do that cause when I do, my lungs burn and its kind of hard for me to breath. You know, in my mind training "Rocky" style seemed like something that would be easy to me, but I guess I'll have to ease in to pushing myself in the cold weather as I'm not quite used to it.

And in the Geek News, I  just got a Beautiful maquette of "Princes Leia & R2"  made by to folks over at "Gentle Giant". I've had my eye on this baby for a quite a while now so I finally glad I broke down and bought it.
